Is MotoPower better than Ancel?

The Ancel AD310 is the most preferred choice among car owners. However, that does not mean it is better than the MotoPower MP69033.

Although both of these offer similar functionality, they differ when it comes to features.

Here, we will compare the two side by side and see which one is the better option for you.

What can both MP69033 and AD310 do?

The MP69033 and AD310 are both very basic OBD2 tools. They function as a car code reader and help car owners diagnose their cars.

Let’s take a look at some of the similarities between the two.

Read & Erase generic OBD2 codes

Both these OBD2 car scanners can help you diagnose your problem.

The AD310 and MP69033 can access a car’s engine control unit and read the fault codes. It lets you know what’s wrong with your vehicle.

You can also erase generic OBD2 fault codes but I wouldn’t recommend doing that. Unless you’ve fixed the underlying problem, the codes will start to pop up again.

These devices only scan and read engine fault codes. To diagnose transmission problems or any other fault, you would need to explore other OBD2 scanners.

Live data & Freeze frame

Sometimes reading codes is not enough. It’s better to have sufficient data to accurately diagnose your vehicle.

Live data helps you do that. It shows real-time data of your vehicle for:

  • Volts
  • RPM
  • Speed
  • Open-loop and closed-loop system status information
  • And many more

Freeze frame is a nifty feature both these OBD2 tools have. It will capture a screenshot of the live data when a faulty code is triggered.

The more data you have, the better you can troubleshoot the problem in your vehicle.

I/M readiness

I/M readiness is short for inspection and maintenance readiness.

State auto registration requires that your vehicle emissions are below the maximum threshold. You can not legally drive your vehicle upon failing an emissions test.

To determine whether your car will pass the emissions test, you must check the I/M readiness.

The I/M readiness feature is present in both code readers.

Retrieve vehicle information

You can even retrieve vehicle information with these scanners. It is quite a useful feature if you’re going to buy a used car.

The MP69033 and AD310 show information like:

  1. Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  2. Calibration ID
  3. Calibration verify number

VIN is a unique identifier that helps a buyer know the specs of the vehicle before they decide to make a purchase.

MP69033 vs. AD310 – What’s the real difference?

Both of these are basic code readers that differ slightly in terms of:

  1. Graphing live data
  2. Price
  3. Warranty
  4. Expected life span

Graphing live data

Not everyone is a numbers wiz when it comes to analyzing data. But when you put that data in a few graphs, analyzing trends becomes easier.

Unfortunately, the AD310 falls short in this department. The MP69033 boasts basic graphs to allow car owners to monitor any suspicious trends and parameters.

The graphs include:

  • RPM
  • Coolant temperature
  • Load value
  • Speed

Perhaps, it might be something to consider!

Price

The MP69033 is around $10 cheaper than the more expensive AD310.

Considering that they both have similar functionality, the MP69033 offers a better bargain!

Warranty

For car owners like myself, a warranty is a holy grail! Repairs can be expensive but having a warranty to cover your car expenses is a huge relief.

These OBD2 scanners come with a warranty as well. However, the AD310 has a one-year warranty while the MP69033 provides a generous two-year warranty.

Expected life span

*This one is a bit tricky to estimate as it’s always going to be different.

I have a lot of customers come in for vehicle repairs that use these code readers. As a mechanic, I was able to ask my clients about their code readers, and with both of these being really popular, I managed to gain a good sense of what sort of lifespan people generally manage to get out of these 2 devices.

The consensus on the expected life span was approximately:

  • AD310 – 6 to 12 months
  • MP69033 – 12+ months

The MP69033 appears to be a more durable product, generally lasting a bit longer than its competitor.

However, this is not always the case. I’ve had experience with a number of Ancel AD310’s in my shop over the years and, in my case, they generally last around 2 years without any issue.

Conclusion – Which one to buy?

MotoPower MP69033

Ancel AD310

It’s time to make a decision on which one is the better code reader.

Although both have similar functionality, the MP69033 takes the win for me personally for several reasons.

As a mechanic, I get to use such products now and then. Here is why I prefer the MP69033 over the AD310:

  • Displays live graphs
  • More durable
  • Longer warranty
  • Excellent value for money
